Today, on July 31, Anahit Matosyan, Ph.D. Candidate at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Kentucky, USA, presented the results of her research at Eurasia International University. The meeting was organized by the American Research Institute of the South Caucasus. The speaker conducted her research not only in Yerevan, but also in Berlin and Istanbul, as many Syrian-Armenians emigrated to third countries during the conflict. As a descendant of refugees displaced during the genocide and resettled in Aleppo, Anahit Matosyan spoke in detail about Syrian women seeking shelter and, particularly, Syrian-Armenian women who have struggled to establish in their homeland. The speaker touched upon several issues such as seeking asylum in Armenia and obtaining legal status, cultural and political affiliation, women’s psychological and social adaptation issues and strategies. She also presented the similarities of Syrian-Armenian women living in cities of three different countries, highlighting that the latter are active in their own food businesses, presenting Syrian cuisine to tourists.
The speaker also shared the obstacles encountered during the research and made suggestions.
At the end of the report Anahit Matosyan was asked a number of questions and a discussion was organized.
The working language of the meeting was English with translation into Armenian.
