In April 2022, Dr Anna Khvorostiankina was appointed as Head of the EIU Law Department.
Anna Khvorostiankina was born on 14 May 1982 in Dnipro (then – Dnipropetrovsk), Ukraine.
She holds a PhD in Legal Theory from the Legislation Institute of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (2012); Second Level Master in “Advanced Studies in European and Transnational Law” from the University of Trento, Italy (2006); and an LL.M. degree from the focus on law-making theory from the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”, Ukraine (2005).
From 2004-to 2005, Anna Khvorostiankina worked as a legal expert at the Centre for Legal Reform and Legislative Drafting at the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine. From 2006-to 2007, she worked as an intern for the European Public Law Centre (Athens, Greece).
From 2008 to 2019, Dr Khvorostiankina worked for the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” first as an Assistant Professor and then as an Associate Professor at the Department of General Jurisprudence and Public Law. Since 2013, she has worked for the Brusov State University (Armenia) as an Associate Professor of Law at the UNESCO Chair for Human Rights, Democracy and Political Science. In 2020, she initiated the establishment of the BSU Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies and had been serving as its founding director till April 2022. Currently, she is contributing to the activities of the Centre as Senior Research Fellow.
In 2017, she was a Visiting Associate Professor at Stanford University, USA, teaching a course “Constitutional Cultures in Transition: Constitutional Values and Identities in Post-Soviet Space”. From 2020-to 2021, she co-taught the course “Constitutional Developments in Armenia” at Martin Luther University (Halle, Germany). She also delivered single guest lectures at several universities in Europe.
At Brusov University, since 2019, Dr Khvorostiakina has coordinated the Jean Monnet Module “Legal Approximation Laboratory” providing teaching, training, research and methodological support on the issues of approximation of the Armenian Legislation with the acquis of the European Union and implementation of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement. Currently, she is also coordinating the Jean Monnet Module “EU, Security and Human Rights” at EIU.
Dr Khvorostiankina is a Member of the Association of European Studies for the Caucasus (AESC). She is active in research activities and has participated in international research projects. Her research interests include the Europeanisation of legal systems of EaP countries, recent developments in theory and practice of judicial argumentation, and particularities of the Rule of Law in societies in transition.
Anna Khvorostiankina is married, with three children.
